Failure of Programmed cell death leads to cancer


Programmed cell death (or PCD) is the death of a cell in any form, mediated by an intracellular program, and is also referred to as Cellular Suicide. PCD is carried out in a biological process, which usually confers advantage during an organism's life-cycle. PCD serves fundamental functions during both plant and animal tissue development. Apoptosis and autophagy, both are the forms of programmed cell death. Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death, or “cellular suicide.” It is different from necrosis, in which cells die due to injury. Apoptosis maintains the balance of cells in the human body and is particularly important in the immune system.

If cells are no longer needed, they commit suicide by activating an intracellular death program. This process is therefore called programmed cell death, although it is more commonly called apoptosis. Programmed cell death (PCD) is an essential process for the life cycle of all multicellular organisms. In higher plants however, relatively little is known about the cascade of genes and signalling molecules responsible for the initiation and execution of PCD.

Cancer is one of the scenarios where too little apoptosis occurs, resulting in malignant cells that will not die. The mechanism of apoptosis is complex and involves many pathways. Cancer cells do not die at the natural point in a cell's life cycle. Cancer is a broad term. It describes the disease that results when cellular changes cause the uncontrolled growth and division of cells.
